I’m curating an exhibition of sound installations for the upcoming Society for Ethnomusicology Annual Meeting, which will take place in Austin at the Hilton Hotel,
December 3-6. The installation will take place at
Studium, a fantastic store/gallery/live music venue located just a few blocks from Hilton.
We are currently looking for 1 or 2 sound works. We are particularly interested in works that relate to ethnography, sensory anthropology, and the emerging field of Sound Studies. Due to space limitations, we strongly recommend that artists design installation pieces for headphones.
Contributors to the exhibition include Steve Feld (UNM), Craig Campbell (UT-Austin), Lina Dib (Rice U), Tom Miller (Berkeley College), and David Goren (Independent Artist).
If you would like to contribute, please send to cardoso AT tamu DOT edu the following information by June 20:
1- a short description of your piece (200 words or less)
2- space required (sq. ft.)
3 – furniture required (ex. table, chair, etc.)
4 – other equipment. In general, you are expected to bring your own gear. However, the Department of Performance Studies at Texas A&M University, where I currently work as a lecturer, has offered some equipment. Let me know if there’s something specific you need and I’ll do my best to make it happen. This is a grassroots initiative. SEM has agreed to include the event in the official program, but made clear it wont be able to offer any financial support. So, unfortunately, we can’t offer any funding for the participants. This includes shipping. I will help with logistics but cannot cover the costs.
